Billy Joel is set to play his biggest metro Detroit concert in more than two decades.
The piano-pop-rocker will bring his stockpile of hits to Comerica Park on July 10 — a Friday night show at the downtown ballpark.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Nov. 15, with a pre-sale for American Express card holders running 10 a.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Thursday.
Joel’s show was announced by the Detroit Tigers’ Kirk Gibson during a Friday media event at Comerica Park.
Joel, 70, last played the region in 2014, one of a host of visits to the Palace of Auburn Hills through the years. The Comerica Park concert will be his first stadium show here since 1994, when he played the Pontiac Silverdome with Elton John.
While he’s best known these days for his ongoing Madison Square Garden residency, Joel still hits the road regularly, with an emphasis on stadium performances the past couple of years.
Rick Franks, head of Live Nation’s North American touring division, said he and Joel had been trying to make a Comerica Park date work for at least three years, but couldn’t find the sweet spot that worked with Joel and the Tigers’ schedules. A show was nearly locked in for last summer until an opportunity to play London’s Wembley Stadium came along, he said.
Summer 2020 looks to be shaping up as a busy season of stadium shows in Detroit: Comerica Park is also hosting rockers Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy (Aug. 19), while Ford Field will get a visit from country heavyweight Kenny Chesney (Aug. 15).
